Para la Niña
"Don't listen to those
who only see with their eyes.
Remember the light when
you were inside.
Keep it within you throughout your life.
Good morning."
Good morning my child. I say hello to you and greet you with a smile. Before you open your beautiful eyes, know that everyday the world is new. You go with me everywhere I go, you are there in the form of wordless thoughts. You live in the deepest part of me. Where I walk to the far edges of the earth only to find that paradise is not a place but a happening. I am writing to you before you are even born, yet I already see you in different forms. You are a single clear whistle that passes through a birds beak, you are the flutter of a butterfly and the incandescent glowing moment when its wings catch the sun. You are the mystery in the river - a spirit so still at its surface but in its depths, true energy is circulating. You are the stoic wisdom of the trees, and the grace in her branches when the wind plays his song. I write to you in this way because one day you'll know that you were once beyond flesh, bone, and desire. You are a thought that moves my spirit. Some say in your first months you were blind. Don't listen to those who only see with their eyes. Remember the light when you were inside. Keep it within you throughout your life. Good morning.

Skin.
Take off that protective skin
It is a must you start showing everything
You have nothing so important
Nothing that no one else hasn't imagined
You are nothing beyond normal
Just wear a bright smile
and light up everyone
You owe their entertainment
Don't be a bad host
Don't have some sense
that you know a lot about you
Because you can always convince yourself anything
What's truth anymore?
It's all about convincing.
Anthem.
Land of the morning
Child of the sun returning
With fervor burning
Thee do our souls adore.
Land dear and holy,
Cradle of noble heroes,
Ne'er shall invaders
Trample thy sacred shores.
Ever within thy skies and through thy clouds
And o'er thy hills and seas;
Do we behold thy radiance, feel the throb
Of glorious liberty.
Thy banner dear to all hearts
Its sun and stars alight,
Oh, never shall its shining fields
Be dimmed by tyrants might.
Beautiful land of love, oh land of light,
In thine embrace 'tis rapture to lie;
But it is glory ever when thou art wronged
For us thy sons to suffer and die.

Brown Skin
Written while in the provinces of the Philippines [click to enlarge] |
Brown skin
The fabric of fertile fields
Strewn across
Worn as a shield
By tireless workers
Brandished by a sun that
Lays upon
Its oppressive embrace
Tempered and untender
A palette of a million hues
Making up white light
A cosmetic of Pacific sun
Paints such complexion
Brown skin is the shade of dry season
It is the color of river bank silt...
Dark like the dirt
under unearthened roots
To the western eye
It is uncivilized
I say it is evidence of truth in spirit
Of sweat and toil
A mixture that reflects the richness of soil
Brown skin
Connected to nature's
Every fluctuation
Just as the shadows of shade change
When trees hear the wind
Brown skin in flux
Shade of the season

Water
∞ What were words when worlds were water? Were we floating on the same channel? You look for me the moment I'm no longer needed. I believe in you beyond the edge of any waterfall. Barely I brace myself for the impact Satisfied you seem in all your allure I could have told you my secrets Did you write me letters with seashore sticks? The sea sent messengers this morning I signed the shore with a heart and a sideways eight ♥∞ I hope you get it in hourglass sand Time will spread changing truths Tell me about your grandmother's face instead The facts I found in shallow days Where my skin sees your feet coming I was warned this place had charm | Circles met each other when we threw stones The universe was born without words What was your favorite part of the play? Mine was when color was born out of baby sounds Wrapped in an endless black blanket Fifrelight shined through cries of unformed space Drifting like a traveling mist Sound embraced her with a transparent heart Colors traveled through like wind finds itself indoors I met you in this ripple of the awakening dream The center of the circle Carried away my reflection When no words are between us I listen to how your heart moves me - daO |
